Older vehicles wait for secure number plates

“A meeting to finalise everything will take place on Wednesday and we will issue a notification to start the process of getting HSRP affixed on old vehicles this week. We need to figure out whether we will first take up vehicles registered between 2009 and 2012 in a series,or start with vehicles registered in a single year,” a Transport official said.

After the Supreme Court recently approved Delhi government’s plan to permit its sole HSRP vendor,Rosmerta,to identify dealers’ premises that could be declared as authorised HSRP affixing centres,work has already begun in this regard,officials said.

“We are in talks with such dealers. Once an agreement is made,a vehicle owner can get the secure number plate affixed when he sends his vehicle for servicing to his dealer,” an official said.

The Transport department hopes that all 72 lakh registered vehicles will be fitted with secure number plates in the next one-and-half years.

The areas which will have centres for old registered vehicles include,Mahipalpur,Dwarka,Okhla Phase-II,Badarpur,Shahdara,Malviya Nagar,Aya Nagar,Mohan Co-operative Estate and Wazirpur. More localities will be identified in the next few weeks.

“A person will have to approach the affixing centre with a copy of their vehicle registration certificate,insurance papers,and a photo-ID if the owner of the vehicle sends someone else to get the number plates. This information will be cross checked by the Transport department. The person will then be given a date and time for the affixing of the HSRP,” a Rosemerta official said.

Meanwhile,in order to test the waters,Rosemerta has already started installing HSRP in old commercial vehicles. These vehicles can get HSRP affixed after they are turned in for a fitness check.

“It will become compulsory to get secure number plates installed for owners of commercial vehicles who want to obtain the annual fitness certificate for their vehicles,” the official said.

Till now,only new vehicles being registered in Delhi had to get secure number plates fitted.
