Acting on complaints from commuters, the Delhi government impounded 18 cabs on Monday over surge pricing, warning of further action if cab companies violated government rules.

Transport Minister Gopal Rai said, “Till 12 pm on Monday, we acted on complaints against 18 private taxis that have been impounded. The strict action resulted in cab companies immediately suspending their arbitrary surge pricing.”

According to official figures, 14 cabs registered in Delhi, three cabs in Haryana and one in Uttar Pradesh were impounded and issued challans for various violations under the Motor Vehicles Act. The complaints of surge pricing were listed in the “permit violation” category, government officials said.

The other violations included not carrying a driving licence, not carrying a registration certificate, not carrying a pollution-under-control certificate, not producing documents for fitness, insurance, not wearing uniform and not wearing a badge.

Rai had announced Monday that the government had appointed a nodal officer in the transport department to especially monitor complaints against private taxis which were overcharging. Complaints were registered on the helpline number or through email. Details of the car were recorded and passed onto the nodal officer monitoring violations.

“The owner was then traced through the registration number and a challan issued. Transport department officials then traced the car and impounded it,” said an official.
