Now,DUSU chief backs semester system

Hours after the Delhi High Court asked DU and DUTA to consult the students’ unions on the contentious issue of implementation of the semester system at the undergraduate level,DUSU president Manoj Choudhary stunned the teachers by throwing his weight behind the administration.

“I am in complete support of the semester system being implemented. It will raise the quality of teaching in the university to international standards,” said Choudhary, who also has the backing of the ABVP.

“The ball is in our court,” Choudhary observed, before sounding out a warning that the semester system should be implemented only after proper planning. Choudhary, however, found no fault in the way the semester system was implemented for undergraduate science courses this year by the Vice-Chancellor. “The Vice-Chancellor is a revolutionary man. What is happening is a revolution. He knows what students want — a year back,we had requested that semester system be implemented, and he has accepted,” claimed the DUSU president.

“The DUTA claims to represent teachers, but they are not doing anything for students. They had even asked teachers not to teach students this year,” Choudhary claimed. “This year,we have not yet got any complaints about the semester system, but we have got complaints against teachers who refuse to teach. I will take action soon,” he warned.

Teachers, however, recall Choudhary singing a different tune at a seminar organised by the DUTA on semester system last year to kick off its current agitation. “He was quite vocal against the implementation of the system. His change in stance is really surprising,” said a senior teacher.

The university, meanwhile, showed no intention of solving the issue amiably and sent a letter to the college principals saying teaching has to be in the semester mode and “any attempt to subvert the process amounts to dereliction of duty and should be immediately reported….”

The letter claims “teacher activists are misleading” teachers and that “the matter of implementation of the semester system in science courses in 2010-2011 is sub judice,” and that it is a “complete misrepresentation of facts”. The university clarified the matter before the court is only an application filed in a civil suit, which sought a restraint order against DUTA office-bearers obstructing the implementation of semester system.
