In order to check harassment of women in the city, the Delhi government will install CCTV cameras in DTC buses in addition to several other schemes to ensure the safety of women, according to government officials. Minister of Health and Women and Child Welfare Professor Kiran Walia said this was being done to check eve-teasing and molestation cases against women while they used public transport in the city. The plan, which will be developed into a comprehensive proposal, will be sent to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely for approval. The scheme is part of a larger campaign for safety of women in public places where NGOs,urban planners, service providers, community and resident groups will be involved in order to spread the message. In addition, womens empowerment programmes will be strengthened. Professor Walia also said in order to bring the women back into the mainstream, equal opportunities would be ensured. A mass awareness campaign for the safety of women would be a step towards that goal, she said.
