Now and Ten

The clothes a woman wears have much to say about her personality and her roots.

The clothes a woman wears have much to say about her personality and her roots. With this idea as the propeller,10 photographs showcasing as many different avatars of an Indian woman were displayed at pioneering designer Ritu Kumar’s showroom in DLF Promenade mall,Vasant Kunj. The exhibition was titled “TEN”.

The photographs taken by emerging photographer Prarthna Singh had the underlying idea that Label (the prêt line from the house of Ritu Kumar) is versatile enough to appeal to all kinds of personalities. The germ of the thought came from Singh in collaboration with Ritu Kumar’s designer son Amrish Kumar — who is the creative director of LABEL — and wants to create a platform for artists to interpret his prêt brand. Each frame in this series was accompanied by an imaginary bio to help viewers connect. A rocker chic with red hair and a tattoo; a sweet newly-wed girl from Punjab,in a colourful salwar-kameez cheerfully sporting her chooda; a confident corporate woman dressed in a grey blazer and black trousers, even a brand-conscious party-goer dressed in a short number — tried to assign life stories to the subjects. “It is an ode to the different faces of an Indian woman, where the outward experience reflects her inner world and her way of life,” says Singh. It was hard to figure that these were actually her self-portraits. “This exhibition began with a desire to leave my comfort zone of photographing others and instead to explore the idea of self-portraiture,” she added.
