Days after the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) received flak from all quarters for the massive waterlogging seen in the Capital after the July 27 showers, the civic body continued to pass the buck.
Following the rains on Tuesday, the agencys control room received 18 complaints of waterlogging – seven from the Central Zone, eight from the South Zone and the rest from the City Zone, officials said. The highest number of complaints came in from areas near the Moolchand flyover,South Extension, the Andrews Ganj flyover and the stretch between Rajghat and Shanti Chowk.
We have already completed the desilting work in all areas. However, there are a lot of local issues that are beyond the MCDs jurisdiction, which cause the problem, MCD spokesperson Deep Mathur said. For instance, most complaints were received from areas near the BRT corridor in South Delhi, but the BRT is under the Delhi government, Mathur said.
There are also instances when the bellmouths of many drains get clogged due to leaves, silt and other material that accumulate due to the rains, which causes waterlogging, he added. The MCD also claimed that waterlogging in all areas was cleared within half an hour of being reported.
According to MCD officials, the civic agency has already completed desilting work in all 1,540 big drains and 3,257 small drains in the city. The current desilting work is for 2009 to 2010,they said . We are fully prepared to tackle waterlogging issues. No problems should arise unless it rains beyond the carrying capacity of drains in the city, Mathur said.
