The accused in the case, identified as Vipin, was arrested on Saturday for allegedly setting his wife Nikki on fire.
The accused, identified as Vipin, was shot at by police on Sunday as he tried to escape from custody. (Express Photo)A day after a man was arrested for allegedly killing his wife by setting her on fire at their home in Greater Noida for dowry, he was shot in the leg by police personnel when he tried to escape, said officers. The woman’s mother-in-law was also arrested on Sunday in the murder case, said police.
Identified as Vipin Bhati (30), the accused was being escorted by a team of officers for the recovery of the container in which the inflammable material, allegedly used in the incident, was kept, when he made the escape bid. Sudhir Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police, Greater Noida, said the accused snatched a pistol from one sub-inspector and tried running away.
He allegedly fired at the team of officers with the intention to kill an officer, according to Kumar. “Then in retaliatory action taken by the police team in self-defence, the accused got injured in the leg when he was shot at. He was sent to a private hospital for treatment,” said the ADCP.
Vipin was arrested on Saturday for allegedly setting his wife Nikki on fire — a purported clip showed him and another woman attacking Nikki. In the disturbing video, Nikki can be seen rolling down the stairs after she was set ablaze. The incident took place on August 21, said police.
An FIR was filed based on a complaint filed by Nikki’s sister Kanchan, who is married to Vipin’s brother Rohit. While Kanchan initially took Nikki to Noida’s Fortis Hospital, she was referred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. Police said Nikki died on her way to Safdarjung Hospital.
Bhati’s brother Rohit, mother Dayawati, father Satveer, and his sister have been booked under sections 103(1) (murder), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The ADCP said the police were informed on Thursday that a woman was burnt to death. “In connection with the above incident, a case was registered under relevant sections of BNS at Kasna police station and the deceased’s husband was arrested,” said Kumar.
Kanchan, in her complaint, told police that she and her sister got married in the family in 2016. They were repeatedly harassed with dowry demands.
According to Nikki’s family, Vipin’s family was given a Scorpio and other gifts initially during the wedding. But they demanded Rs 36 lakh and were given another car. However, the demands continued.
