The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has completed 80-85 per cent work on its Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping project that it claims will bring more transparency in public utility projects.
For the project,3D-satellite images of the NDMC areas have been taken on a GIS platform,which can be zoomed in and out. Through the mapping system,the civic body is gathering information on all public utility services like roads,streetlights and buildings. After feeding the information into a software designed for the purpose,the civic body can zoom in on any particular area and gather information.
Through the initiative,the NDMC aims to counter illegal construction and theft of properties. Problems such as electricity faults can be tackled more easily as the fault can be traced faster,officials say. The number of trees in an area has also been mapped so that greenery can be maintained better.
The NDMC has been working on this project for the last two years it is expected to be completed in six months time. The GIS system will be used to improve various civic services by mapping every pipeline,electricity line etc,in the areas. If there is a power failure,NDMC will be able to identify the problem immediately using the system, an NDMC official said.
We will also be able to get information on when a road was constructed,the last time it was repaired,the contractor who carried out the job and the cost of the process. A general survey is being conducted to gather such information on all our public utility services, said a senior official of NDMC.
The agency is planning to make the 3D-GIS system partly accessible to the public so that complaints registered by them will also be displayed on the system marked by red and green lights (red signifying complaints that need to be looked into,and green marking complaints that have been addressed). A consultant has to be appointed for this project.
