Music at Work

Area79 saw different strains of music sweat it out.

Area79 saw different strains of music sweat it out.

When we first entered Blue Frog last Saturday on a balmy afternoon, the crowd was as scattered and sparse as the raindrops that appeared later that night. Area79,Blue Frog’s biggest property in association with Audio Ashram, had more than 40 bands performing on four stages throughout the day. But when it started at 3pm,there was just a slow trickle of people. As the sun set,it was a deluge as people flooded Blue Frog, permeating through the heavily guarded entrance.

The club was reserved for psychedelic music,a wise choice given its racing BPM (Beats Per Minute) and bass-heavy base, with psy artistes such as Crash & Boom,Whitewizard,Flipknot and Shivacentral tearing up the stage to a rapidly growing,dread-lock sporting crowd. Outside in the main courtyard,a medley of reggae acts had Riddim Funktion,Jass B’stards,Deveshi Collective and rock outfits perform, including The Circus,Sky Rabbit,Jester and Syncopation, the latter two of which launched their albums. Globetrotting beat boxer,MC Eucalips, entertained the crowd at the live area between acts, creating an astonishing array of sounds through his mouth,a veritable sound machine in human form.

The roof had two stages,an al fresco dining area (for those with earthier appetites than the food for the soul that music is supposed to be) as well as,some retail therapy in the form of a flea market with stalls by alternative clothing and lifestyle brands such as Dirty Laundry,Baby Baniya and Glyph. The stages had a dance/techno area and a chill/dub area, with the usual suspects of B.L.O.T (Basic Love Of Things),Jitter,Antiq and Ash Roy playing at one,and Swaggamuffin,Kumbhkaran,Loop Baba and Reggae Rajah’s Diggy Dang at the other. Import acts included Waga Waga from the UK,and Illuminous and Atmos, both from Sweden, among others.

There were complaints about the “over-lapping of completely different sounds”,but we didn’t quite agree. Leaning over the terrace, watching Sattyananda Electroclassical (which comprises eclectic sounds of the sitar, synthesizer and flute) perform, while Waga Waga dropped their heavy bass behind us,there was a strange but mellifluous confluence of music. And while it’s hard to retain the sheer range of performances we heard,we can’t wait for next year’s Area79.
