The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has achieved a record property tax collection this year, with a 20 per cent surge compared to the same period last year, civic officials said on Thursday. While a total of Rs 1,687.57 crore was collected till August last year, the civic agency has collected Rs 2,024.75 crore from taxpayers during the same period this year.

According to Delhi Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh, the overwhelming response in property tax collection was due to the Property Tax Amnesty Scheme 2025-26, known as the Sampattikar Niptaan Yojana (SUNIYO).

“Till August this year, the Assessment and Collection Department has collected over Rs 2,024 crore in property tax revenue, which is approximately 20 per cent higher than the amount collected during the corresponding period last year,” Singh said in a statement.

He said the number of property taxpayers has also increased from 9,69,267 to 11,37,502, marking an impressive growth of nearly 18 per cent. He added that the BJP-led MCD is working diligently to provide best-in-class services to the residents of Delhi.

“The key driver for the record collection has been the Tax Amnesty Scheme called ‘SUNIYO’ 2025-26. In the first three months alone, 55,754 new UPIC-registered taxpayers have participated under the scheme, generating an additional Rs 151.88 crore in revenue collection. The department also highlighted the success of the 10 per cent early payment rebate, which significantly increased timely compliance among taxpayers,” the mayor said.

He said the corporation generated approximately Rs 2,132 crore in revenue during the financial year 2024-25, while collections have already reached Rs 2,024 crore so far.

The ‘SUNIYO’ scheme will remain operational till September 30, he said, adding that under this initiative, property taxpayers who can pay the current year’s tax as well as the last five years’ tax dues will receive a full waiver on all applicable interest and penalties.
