Moving shot

Set up last month,a group called Travelography gives you the opportunity to travel and hone your camera skills

Last month, photography enthusiast Ajay Sood set up Travelography,a group that lets others like him explore different places and hone their photography skills.

Says 51-year-old Sood,“Photography, especially travel photography,is something that really interests me. The idea was to have a platform where people can indulge in their passion and at the same time, learn to address the challenges that they may have to face during a shoot. Travel photographers face certain problems. Unlike other photography genres like fashion, where lights are set up for the photographers,we have to work with natural light. There also may be some restrictions on using equipment like professional camera, tripod. Through Travelography,I wanted to address these issues.”

An advertising professional who quit his job last year,he now devotes his time to photography.

Sood, also called Travelure because of his lure for travel, has conducted many photography workshops over the years in different genres like fashion, food and architecture. “I realised that the genre I really enjoy is travel and that was when I thought about the need of doing something related just to travel photography,so Travelography came about.”

The group on Facebook,Travelography by Travelure, now has about 142 members from all over Delhi,Gurgaon and Noida. Anybody who is interested in travel and photography can join this group free of cost. Sood organises expedition-cum-workshops once a month, where members get a chance to travel and photograph.

“We had organised a day trip to Neemrana on October 22,and about 23 members came. They took pictures of a 1,000-year-old village and a step-well which is said to be the deepest step-well in Rajasthan,” says Sood.

All the expenses of the trip are shared among the members. Also, members don’t have to buy special cameras when they are travelling,“I tell them to get whatever camera they have. Even if people want to take pictures using their cellphones, they can do that. It is not about the equipment,it’s more about what you are capturing and how you do it that’s important,” says Sood.

Jayeeta Saha,a member from Gurgaon, who works in the real estate management sector, says,“Travelography for me is something that has given me a chance to meet like-minded people and explore new places. Since I am new to Gurgaon, for me it was a way of learning about new places and also about travel photography, something that I am fond of. I went for the Neemrana trip and that helped me learn how one can see a place through a camera lens.”

Sood has planned another expedition on November 26 and 27 to Agra and Fatehpur Sikri.

“Members have a discussion and then come up with suggestions for the places they would like to visit. But,since we have just started with this group,I want to take people for day trips or overnight stays. It’ll take some time for the members to develop a comfort level with each other, and then later,we can plan going to other far-off destinations.”
