Mumbai-based auction house,Saffronart,will bring an untitled 1931 Zebegény landscape painting by Amrita Sher-Gil under the hammer during its Autumn Art Auction. The two-day auction begins today and features 75 works by modern and contemporary artists.

Estimated between Rs 3.24 crore and Rs 4.32 crore,Sher-Gil’s work is said to have emerged from one of her many holidays in the Hungarian village of Zebegény. Of the five paintings in the series,this is the only one to have come up for a public auction.

The landscape is featured alongside works by artists such as Arpita Singh,whose Summer Months depicts the communal riots in Gujarat in 2002; and Bharti Kher’s Indra’s Net (6). In the latter,Kher’s trademark bindi depicts the Buddhist philosophy of interdependence of all phenomena,known as “Indra’s Net”.

Another famous work is called Falling Figure with Bird,made by the late modernist artist Tyeb Mehta after a visit to the front during the Indo-Pak war of 1965. He had created an iconic series called “Falling Figures”,which won him a gold medal at the first Indian Triennale in Delhi in 1968. Falling

Figure with Bird was made in 1988 and is currently estimated at Rs 8.10 crore to Rs 10.80 crore.

The late MF Husain,whose 95th birth anniversary fell this week,also figures in the auction,with his most popular motif,the horse. An untitled work,acquired from a private collection in the US,is priced between Rs 16.2 lakh and Rs 21.6 lakh.

Another untitled work,by Kolkata-based Jogen Chowdhury,is inspired by Indian family life and folklore.

Other artists include contemporary names such as Sudhir Patwardhan,Jitish Kallat and Atul Dodiya,and FN Souza and VS Gaitonde among modernists.
