Minus for Plus

For the first time,a fashion designer has realised that the world isn’t made up of size-zero.

For the first time,a fashion designer has realised that the world isn’t made up of size-zero. Kolkata-based Kiran Uttam Ghosh launched a fashion line at Ogaan in Hauz Khas on Tuesday that promised a booty for ‘regular’ women who can’t boast of model sizes. But Ghosh’s line, called “Big Beautiful Women”,didn’t reflect a commitment to plus-size women, all it did was unveil some less-than-impressive designs in bigger sizes. The collection comprises simple pleated dresses in orange and green with zipper edges suggesting a no-drama approach. There are also pleated sarees with heavy embellishments, kurtas and embellished jackets in red and coral blue. These may be for big, beautiful women but those with a cluttered sense of fashion.

“I was going through my stock reports and realised that the 12s,14s and 16s were flying off the shelves and this got me thinking. Thus,a line like this,” explains Ghosh. Fashion is about appropriate styling for a particular body type, just inflating the size of the garment isn’t enough. Thumbs up for the thought; a thumbs down for the execution.
