Delhi Metro on Monday crossed the national capital border and reached its satellite city Noida for the first time with the start of the trial run on the corridor that is expected to be opened to the public by next month.
The opening of the route will result in a paradigm shift in the travel habit of millions of people in the National Capital Region. Metro began the trial run between Yamuna Bank and Noida Sector 16 Metro stations covering approximately 8 km. This is the first time Delhi Metro crossed the borders of
Delhi and entered the NCR region.
“The trial run began at 12:30 p.m. in the afternoon after a small puja was performed at the Yamuna Bank Depot. Two trial runs (round trips) were conducted successfully between 12:30 pm and 4:00 pm today on this section,” DMRC Chief Public Relations Officer Anuj Dayal said.
The 13.1-km stretch between Yamuna Bank and Noida Sector 32 is expected to be inaugurated by the middle of November to enable the people from Noida to visit the India International Trade Fair at Pragati Maidan begining on November 14.
The trial runs will continue for one week on this section and is likely to be further extended from Noida Sector -16 to Noida Sector-32 in the first week of November. Trial runs on the section was delayed due to strengthening of piers on the line as a precautionary measure.
During the trial runs today, the interaction of the Metro train with physical infringement (civil structure) was checked to ensure there was no physical blockage during the movement of the train on the track between Yamuna Bank and Noida Sector 16 Metro station,Dayal said.
Today, the train was run at a slow speed of 10 to 20 kmph since it was the first run. The speed will gradually be increased to 50 kmph and ultimately a maximum of 80 kmph will be generated during the trial runs.
“The entire signaling system, which is based on Automatic Train Protection (ATP),is also being tested during the trials. The signaling system has been provided by Siemens,” he said.
The response of the train at different speeds, braking of the train and the interconnection with Operations Control Centre (OCC) will also be monitored during the trials. The behaviour of the track system and the Over Head Electrification will also be checked repeatedly during the trials.
During each 24-hour cycle in the 2 weeks of trial run, trains will run for about 8 hours intensively everyday and the remaining time will be used for completion and rectification of various works,Dayal said.
Special emphasis will be given on safety which is the prime concern during a trial,as DMRC has to ensure that the system is fully safe for use before the section is opened to the public.
With the opening of the section,Line III will comprise a total of 42 stations and its length will increase to 47.2 km.
There are 10 stations in the 13.1 km section, out of which four fall within Delhi while six stations in Noida. Decks were cleared for the DMRC to cross Delhi and enter NCR when Parliament passed a Bill to give legal cover for construction, operation and maintenance of the metro rail system in the National Capital Region and other metro cities. The upcoming Metro stations on the much awaited Noida corridor will have a completely new and modern look. The exterior of the station will be made using a special technique called ACP (Aluminium Composite Panel).
This technique is mostly used in the exterior portion of malls and other new buildings to provide an aesthetic and modern look. The stations have been designed using a post modern architectural approach, keeping in mind the international appeal of the Delhi Metro. Parking facility has been provided at all stations till New Ashok Nagar and in Noida at Botanical Garden and Noida City Centre Metro stations.
