MCD byelections: CM Rekha Gupta’s old ward produces BJP’s biggest victory

Anita Jain of the BJP swept to victory by a margin of 10,101 votes, beating Gupta’s own 2022 margin of 7,990. Jain, who defeated Babita Rana of the AAP, was one of six women who were elected councillors Wednesday, all from the BJP.

Shalimar Bagh B, the MCD ward represented by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta before she was elected to the Assembly earlier this year, produced the highest margin of victory among the 12 civic wards for which byelections were held on November 30.

Anita Jain of the BJP swept to victory by a margin of 10,101 votes, beating Gupta’s own 2022 margin of 7,990. Jain, who defeated Babita Rana of the AAP, was one of six women who were elected councillors Wednesday, all from the BJP.

The vacancies in the MCD House arose after 11 sitting councillors were elected to the Delhi Assembly, and one councillor to Lok Sabha in 2024. The Shalimar Bagh B ward, which is part of the Northwest district of Delhi, was reserved for women.

Jain told The Indian Express that as councillor she would focus on cleanliness and waste management, including reinforcing door-to-door collection, speeding up and systematising the removal of debris, and implementing modern waste-management systems.

“In the ward’s market areas, safe and accessible public toilets for both women and men will be constructed, with strict monitoring to ensure regular cleaning and proper functioning,” she said.

Her priority, Jain said, would be to “further accelerate the initiatives and development works of the triple-engine government” of BJP in Delhi.
