Three days after a toll attendant was shot dead by a commuter at the Kherki Dhaula toll plaza on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, police on Monday arrested two persons in early morning raids.
Vijay Veer Yadav (28) was arrested from his village Kho near Manesar for shooting toll booth attendant Umesh Kant Pandey. Yadavs friend Manjeet Singh was arrested from Shikohpur village. Singh runs a gym in Shikohpur.
Police said after the incident on Friday night,Yadav had asked Singh to go to the toll plaza and enquire about the shooting. The CCTV footage of Singh making the enquiry at toll booth number 16 was provided to the police by concessionaire DS Constructions (DSC).
Police have also recovered the white Bolero,in which Yadav was travelling.
The two accused were presented in a city court, which sent them in three-day police custody.
Commissioner of Police S S Deswal said 41 teams were constituted to hunt for the accused and the vehicle. We had no eyewitnesses or any other evidence. We were completely dependent on the footage, said Deswal.
Police closely examined the the vehicle in the footage, making a note of key features like its front grill, black paint on the side, black handle for the drivers window but silver/white for the rear window, roof rail, etc. They also noted that the vehicle was a high-end model.
Fifteen police teams were sent out to verify the whereabouts of all 350 Boleros registered in Gurgaon in 2011,17 teams were sent to the 35 toll-exempted villages,12 teams checked liquor stores in the area and three teams visited car accessory shops in old Gurgaon.
Police carried with them Singhs photo from the footage, which helped them nab him. Yadav was arrested later.
According to police, after the shooting,Yadav drove to Sector- 14 market, where he made a few changes to the car. He then slept in the car.
The toll attendant had asked for the original registration certificate of the vehicle. Yadav produced a photocopy and this led to an argument. The boom barrier was already open and Yadav could have gone ahead, but he did not do so and shot the attendant. This is clearly a case of road rage, said Deswal.
Police said Yadav had purchased the weapon used in the crime from a former tenant around a year and half ago.
He got the Bolero from a friend,Naveen, who is the owner of a car accessories shop in Gurgaon. The owner of the vehicle is one Ashok Kumar, police said.
Deswal said Yadav was drunk at the time of the incident. He has a history of drink driving, said Deswal. Police said Yadav was drinking with Naveen and another friend Vinod on the night of the crime.
