A man allegedly slapped and shoved AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal during a roadshow in the South Delhi constituency on Friday. The man, who damaged Kejriwal’s spectacles, was assaulted by a large number of AAP supporters before being handed over to police.
Police said the man has been identified as Abdul Wahid (20), a resident of Jamia Nagar. Abdul was arrested from the spot and a case has been registered against him. Police said Abdul filed a cross-FIR, alleging that unknown persons and AAP volunteers had assaulted him. DCP (Southeast) P Karunakaran confirmed that two FIRs had been registered.
Police said Abdul told them that he was an AAP member and he felt cheated by Kejriwal, who had promised to protest the Muzaffarnagar riots.
Meanwhile, Kejriwal and South Delhi candidate Col Devindra Sehrawat made repeated requests to their supporters to maintain peace and not react to the attack. The man was rescued from the angry mob by AAP members and Col Sehrawat.
“We will remain non-violent even if they try to kill us,” Kejriwal said. At the end of the roadshow, Kejriwal again admonished his supporters, saying that the act of beating up “that boy” was “completely wrong”.
The AAP chief also repeated his allegation that the BJP and Congress supported gas price hike and invoked all religions, claiming that the AAP was a “movement guided by a higher power”.
He refuted the allegations levelled by the BJP that he had “run away from the government”.
“They keep saying I have run away. Had the BJP been there when Lord Ram had been sent to exile, they would have claimed that Ram got scared and ran away, he does not know anything about governance,” Kejriwal said.
