Madhuri Dixit and Tabu recall…

He was 85 years old when I first met him and I always marveled at his energy. He was always planning ahead and appeared tireless. I once told him to sit down,relax and have a cup of tea,so he said,“What you are asking me to do is not relaxation,it’s a punishment. Painting relaxes me.” I also asked him if his feet hurt since he never wore shoes. He told me that his feet now felt like shoes. I don’t know how many times he saw Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. Only he knows the final count. Working in Gaja Gamini was an unique experience. He wanted each frame to look like a painting. He was the director but was always the artist first. I spoke to him three months back. He was as excited as a child about his latest project about 100 years of Indian cinema. This ability to always be in the moment was uniquely Husain saab.

Meenaxi will remain one of the best experiences of my life both professionally and personally. His death is an irreplaceable loss. I’ll miss Husain saab as a great artist and also as a person. Tabu
