Lockdown time,entry only for pass-holders

From Thursday morning, only those carrying valid passes will be allowed inside the 13 Commonwealth Games venues.

From Thursday morning, only those carrying valid passes will be allowed inside the 13 Commonwealth Games venues and the Games Village. A large number of armed policemen and paramilitary personnel have been deployed across the stadia and the Village, said Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat, confirming the lockdown from midnight.

The Delhi Police, the nodal agency for Games security, will conduct various drills, including anti-sabotage checks, after taking over the venues, the official said.

Meanwhile, apart from around 80,000 Delhi Police personnel, over 17,500 paramilitary personnel,3,000 commandos and 100 anti-sabotage check teams will be deployed across the city, which is under a red alert after the Jama Masjid attack. The Army will also be on standby.

Downplaying the delay in handing over of venues for security,Delhi Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal said: “We know the stadia and surrounding areas. We know the city very well. So securing them or other areas will not be a problem.”

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram also reviewed the security arrangements, which includes heli-borne snipers,a four-layered security cordon around venues. There will also be snipers on rooftops, commando hit teams and expert groups to tackle any chemical, biological or nuclear attacks.

“We are closely working with central Intelligence agencies. The Air Force will be surveying the airspace. We will have heli-borne snipers patrolling the skies,” an official said.

Elaborate arrangements are also made for the entry for athletes and officials into the Village. While all athletes will be thoroughly checked at the entry point, the number plates of vehicles will be scanned to see whether they are authorised to enter the place. The boom barrier will be opened only after the vehicle clears the radio frequency checking. If somebody tries to enter forcefully, there will be a tyre-killer followed by a road blocker.
