L-G Khanna convenes meeting on Capitals waste management plan

Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna on Wednesday called for a meeting to review the progress in the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Master Plan of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna on Wednesday called for a meeting to review the progress in the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Master Plan of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

The MCD has been working on issues like collection,segregation,storage,transportation,processing and disposal of various kinds of municipal solid waste. Some senior MCD officials had visited Germany last year to study the latest technology used there.

Out of approximately 7,000 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated daily in the city,nearly 6,000 metric tonnes of MSW is transported to the sanitary landfill sites.

The three sanitary landfill sites in the Capital are almost saturated. Technology-based processes of disposal of MSW,such as incineration,which is practiced in Germany and other countries,are thus being actively considered by the MCD.

The MCD plans to make Delhi free of dumping sites in the next two years and implement a door-to-door collection system of municipal solid waste.

In the first phase,expected to begin by April this year,waste collection from the Civil Lines,Rohini and Dwarka Zones is being considered,MCD officials said.
