Kamran had stepped out of jail 20 days ago

Soon after Siddiqui’s arrest,a riot-like situation arose at the Parliament Street police station, where supporters of Ramdev and the former’s relatives had gathered

This is not the first time that 39-year-old Kamran Siddiqui has run into trouble with the police. Siddiqui, who runs an NGO and a security agency, has six criminal cases registered against him.

Soon after Siddiqui’s arrest,a riot-like situation arose at the Parliament Street police station, where supporters of Ramdev and the former’s relatives had gathered. Extra police personnel had to be called in to control the situation.

Siddiqui’s NGO,Real Cause,is a petitioner in the September 19,2008,Batla House encounter case. A law graduate from the Jamia Millia Islamia University,Siddiqui was arrested in Noida last month for delivering inflammatory speeches on the Babri Masjid demolition. He had come out of jail only 20 days ago.

Siddiqui was arrested on Saturday from the Constitution Club, where Ramdev was addressing a press conference on black money. Besides the organisation,he also runs a security agency — Royal Source. The wireless set, which was recovered from him, belonged to his agency, police said. Siddiqui was carrying the ink in a petroleum jelly box.

“There was no restriction on the entry of visitors at the venue. The policemen did not find anything amiss as they presumed he was one of Ramdev’s security guards, and the securitymen assumed he was from the police,” said a police officer. Ramdev has been provided with Y-category security by the Delhi Police.

After being assaulted by Ramdev’s supporters,he was taken to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. However,Siddiqui’s brother Haroon said,“My brother has no criminal cases against him.”

Siddiqui,a resident of Zakir Nagar,is married and has a daughter. “We have registered a case under Sections 355 (criminal assault) and Section 153 (promoting enmity among communities) of the IPC,” the officer said.

Anna: Attempt to blacken face of democracy

Social activist Anna Hazare criticised the “ink attack” on Baba Ramdev on Saturday. In a press note,he said Ramdev was working for the betterment of the country and such attacks won’t deter him.

“It wasn’t an attempt to blacken Baba Ramdev’s face, but an attempt to blacken the face of democracy. Such attacks will not affect the people’s movement, but only give it momentum. Blackening a person with a clean character does not taint his personality. Such taints get washed away in minutes. Baba Ramdev will keep fighting for the welfare of the society, and workers like me will keep supporting him,” said Hazare.
