The Joint Struggle Committee (JSC) of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is set to begin a new round of negotiations with the amicus curiae,Gopal Subramaniam who was reinstated early last week. Five members of the JSC are likely to meet with the amicus curiae on Monday evening at his residence.
ABVP secretary JNU,Sourabh Kumar, and Saket Bahuguna will be representing ABVP in the negotiations with Gopal Subramaniam. We will discuss the possibilities of getting relaxations from the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations, said Sourabh. He also added,Last time,we thought we were going in the right direction and some headway could be made but then he (Subramaniam) resigned over the 2G scam.
Negotiations have been held thrice in the last two years but no decision was taken regarding the JNU students union elections. The last round of discussions were held in March 2011,before the amicus curiae resigned.
AISA General Secretary,Sucheta De who will also be a part of the JSC team, said their agenda would be,To get maximum possible relaxations from the Lyngdoh Commission Guidelines.
The negotiations, which were were to be held on Saturday were later postponed till Monday. The National Students Union of India (NSUI) has always rejected the idea of implementing Lyngdoh Committee guidelines in the JNU campus. NSUI General Secretary,Iqbal Singh said,It is unfortunate that Lyngdoh is being discussed as an option in the campus. We will request the amicus curiae to make JNU an exception and allow elections according to the JNUSU constitution,as has been the case.
After the submission of the report in the Supreme Court on May 26 2006,the court had directed all colleges and university to conduct elections in accordance with the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations.
