US football body chief Gulati draws parallels between state of the game in the two countries
National football coach Bob Houghtons idea of having an exclusive training period for the national team and stress on youth development is what Sunil Gulati was working on in the United States until the 1990 World Cup when the country staged a comeback on soccers biggest stage after 40 years.
Saying India was in a similar situation, the US Soccer Federation president stressed such a programme should have short-term targets as well to sustain the interest and motivation levels.
To popularise a sport that is not No. 1 is one of the common challenges (between India and the US). The landscapes are different but we were on the same path, said Gulati.
But for youth development it takes a lot of time to show up. For such a long-term programmes sustenance,short-term successes are very important. And for the national team we had a similar plan too. We had separate camps, ranging from two weeks to two years, but it cant go on year after year. The league is important for the players.
Qualifying for the 1990 World Cup and hosting the 1994 World Cup were the successes that increased the popularity levels and the standard, he said at a press conference.
Exchange programmes
Gulati also talked about some soccer exchange programmes between the two countries, like the Indian U-17 teams tour last season, although he didnt confirm any US teams visit. But this time around,it may feature other aspects including refereeing, coaching, administration and a trial for the Indian players in the Major League Soccer.
I had talks with the AIFF regarding some of the exchange programmes. We have spotted three-four areas to work together. It might involve the training of Indian referees, coaches and administrators in the US and the womens team as well. We are also open to trials for Indian players for the MLS League, Gulati added.
Gulati played down reports of the US national teams participation in this years Nehru Cup. We cant play our national team in August as we have some international matches including the World Cup qualifiers. Had it been scheduled for January we could have played, the 47-year old added.
