For Gurgaon residents applying for a driving licence, the process just got a bit tough. Taking note of the increasing number of traffic violations and accidents in the city, the Gurgaon traffic police added another procedure in the process of obtaining a driving licence.

Vishnu Dayal,ACP (Traffic),said: “Most traffic violations in the city have happened due to drink driving or negligence on part of the driver. The traffic police has added another process in obtaining a permanent driving licence. The initial learner’s licence will be provided to the applicant on the basis of a test. Initially,it was easy to obtain the beginners’ license by filling out a form and within 45 days the applicant could apply for a permanent licence after giving a driving test at the driving track in Mini-Secretariat. Now,applicants will have to undergo a 90-minute training session at the traffic centre in Sector-51,Gurgaon. The focus of the session will be on wearing helmets, understanding road signage and traffic safety.”

The test will be computerised and applicants will have to get at least 60 per cent marks to qualify for a learner’s licence. A senior traffic police officer said, the tougher the norms, the better the chance of curbing traffic violations.

Data released by traffic police, states that the number of road accidents in Gurgaon has increased when compared to last year.
