A day after 14 people died in a blaze at a congregation of eunuchs in Nand Nagri,Delhi Mayor Rajni Abbi told the House that community halls will not be allotted for functions and meetings till fire safety measures are in place.

The state government too has said it will stop granting permission for functions inside tents without prior fire clearances.

Officials of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board, which manages the Nand Nagri community hall, said they granted permission for Sunday’s congregation on an affidavit from the organisers that they will procure fire clearance.

The agency followed existing rules that require them to grant permission to organisers who submit an affidavit committing they’ll procure fire and police clearances, the agency’s CEO Chetan Sanghi said.

In this case,it turns out they defaulted on the affidavit and didn’t apply for fire clearance. We have decided now we will not allow any scope for organisers to default in this fashion,” Sanghi said. He issued an order instructing all officials to grant permissions for holding functions inside tents only after organisers submit a copy of the fire and police clearance.

All approvals given for usage of our community centres will be reviewed now and organisers will be asked to submit fire and police clearances,” Sanghi said. Presently ,organisers need to give an undertaking to the MCD that generators will not be used without police permission.
