A Delhi Court has refused to allow defreezing of a UK bank account of a consultancy firm,accused of receiving USD 20.07 million in kickbacks from a Russian firm for securing a Rs 2,066 crore-contract from National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC). The court said no such order could be passed without the approval of competent authorities in India and Britain. The CBI had registered a case against NTPC officials,Russian firm M/s FGUPVO Technopromexport (TPE) and others including Delhi-based consultancy firm M/s Ravina Associates Pvt Ltd and its head Ravina Khurana,under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Khurana and her firm had moved an application for allowing the Natwest Bank London to defreeze their account. The court said the account was frozen following an arrangement between the two countries and it cannot be defreezed without their approval.

Verdict on rape case today
More than four years after a Delhi University girl was allegedly abducted and gangraped in a moving car here,a city court is likely to pronounce its verdict on Monday against the arrested accused. The 20-year-old student of DU,hailing from Mizoram,was abducted around 2.15 am on May 8,2005 from Dhaula Kuan here when she was walking back home after buying food from a roadside eatery and was raped by four accused in a moving car,as per the prosecution.

3 injured in wedding firing
Three people were injured at a wedding as the relative of the bridegroom fired in the air in celebration. One of them is reportedly in a serious condition. The police have arrested the accused and are questioning him to find out whether or not the gun he was carrying was licensed. The incident happened in Shahpur village in Narela where one Rinku was getting married. During the Ghudchadhi ceremony,his cousin,Ramesh Kumar,fired in the air using his double barrel gun. Three guests from the groom’s side,Mukesh,Varun and another youth,who has not been identified yet,were injured. Mukesh and Varun received bullet injuries on the neck and shoulder while the third victim was hit in the abdomen and is in a serious condition at Jaipur Golden hospital.

Meet on food security kicks off
The government must implement the recommendations of the National Commission for Farmers submitted in 2006-07 and learn from Latin American countries about their experience of Zero Hunger programmes,renowned agricultural scientist M S Swaminathan said at a three-day national conference that kicked off on Sunday. The India-Latin America,Caribbean Cooperation for Sustainable Food Security is being organised by the IFFCO Foundation and Ministry of Agriculture was opened by Minister for Water Resources Pawan Bansal. Bansal said food crisis is a global problem and a new irrigation policy must be in place to address the issue.

Snag in local train
Services in a local train were briefly disrupted late this evening due to a short circuit in the jumper connecting its two coaches. EMU GND4 which plies from Ghaziabad to New Delhi stopped near Shivaji Bridge around 8.50 pm when there was a short circuit in the jumper. The train had to be stopped for a while till the technical problem was attended to.
