When Renuka Taneja,a National Institute of Design alumnus, started Windows Art and Craft Studio in Delhi 11 years ago,the idea was to create artwork from waste material such as discarded CDs,bottle caps and even egg shells. The Studio trains children to transform these items into pen stands, book shelves and dolls among others. An annual exhibition of the works is the highlight of the Studio’s calendar.

This summer, the exhibition is being held at Sanskriti Anandgram at MG Road, and the theme is ‘Owls of Joy’,an effort to acknowledge 2011 as the Year of the Forest. Over 60 children, aged between three and 18,have displayed sketches, paintings, dolls, chairs, tables and photo frames. On display are also fish, animals and birds with colourful plumage made from oil cans. The works reveal an attention to detail and out-of-the-box imagination. Suyesha Dutta,13,made an interesting presentation — a book shelf created out of old film reel boxes. “I am trying to show the forest during the day and during the night,” she said.

“Over the years, there has been a degree of specialisation. Earlier,we used ordinary waste materials, but now we have graduated to more challenging matrial such as old PVR dabbas. We teach the children that it is alright to succeed after a series of atempts,” added Taneja, who had also roped in carpenters to help the children create what they visualised.

The exhibition is on till August 2. Contact: 26498484
