The accused is absconding and police teams are trying to trace him.A man allegedly set his 25-year-old wife on fire on a crowded traffic roundabout in northeast Delhi’s Jyoti Nagar on Thursday afternoon.
According to police, the couple’s 6-year-old marriage had run into trouble and they had been living apart for the past few months.
Mohammad Raees, armed with a bottle of kerosene, called his wife Rubina to a meeting point at the Loni roundabout to ostensibly resolve their longstanding domestic problems. However, he instead poured kerosene on her and lit a match to her body on Thursday afternoon, said police.

Raees then fled the scene as his wife kept screaming. Locals then put out the fire and rushed her to hospital. “The woman was admitted to Guru Tegh Bahadur hospital, where she was treated for 70-75 per cent burn injuries. The burn injuries are severe and her condition is said to be critical with little chance of survival,” joint commissioner of police (eastern range) Sanjay Beniwal said.
“We have registered a case of attempt-to-murder. The accused is absconding and police teams are trying to trace him. Eyewitnesses are also being questioned,” he said.
According to police, Raees and Rubina were married for six years. They have two children aged 5 and 3. The husband and wife used to quarrel over domestic and marital issues and had begun living separately. Rubina was living with her mother in Seemapuri while the children were with Raees in his house in Indrapuri, Ghaziabad.
When Raees called Rubina to Loni, she was initially reluctant, but then agreed, police said. When she turned up, an argument started and ended with Raees setting her on fire.
