How to prepare for the board exams

The purpose of Board exam is to check subject knowledge and conceptual strength of a student at a wider level.

BIOLOGY

l The purpose of Board exam is to check subject knowledge and conceptual strength of a student at a wider level. So for that generalisation of your knowledge and concept is essential.

l Study regularly; take out time for at least three subjects a day.

l Students must focus on ways to ease the stress and attempt to formulate different strategies to get a good score.

l Do follow a planned, clear and rigorous approach with clear understanding of concepts and with their application.

l Effective time management during examinations is another greater tool to score well. Do divide time to attempt different sections of the paper and keep some time to revise the paper at end.

l Practise diagrams in the NCERT textbook with proper labelling.

l Practise mock test papers keeping a time limit of 3 hours to learn time management skills.

l Be in touch with the CBSE previous years papers, sample papers, etc.

l Constructive utilisation of 15 minutes, question paper reading time should be followed.

l During the examination, start with questions in which you are very confident.

l Go for the exam with a positive state of mind.

Studying for a biology exam may seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. If you follow a few simple steps. It would also help you score higher. Now,let’s take a quick look at the unit-wise weightage.

Genetics and Evolution

l In the days before the exam, eat light and nutritious food. Meditate for 15-20 minutes.

l Sleep well before the exam.

l Take a break of 15minutes after an hour of study. This would ensure quality study which is more important than quantity study.

l Follow your NCERT textbook and when you’ve fully understood the concept, browse through your school notes and test papers.

l Practise as many CBSE sample papers and previous years’ papers as possible in a timed environment. This would help you understand the pattern of questions and how to attempt the paper.

l Take note of the common questions that have been asked and observe how the question should be answered.

Chemistry

l Make a schedule and follow it strictly.

l Divide Chemistry in four parts — Physical,Inorganic ,Organic and last three chapters, namely,Biomolecules,Polymers and Chemistry in everyday life

l In physical chemistry, practise all formula and terms in NCERT in writing.

l For numerical equations, write the formula first, substitute after making corrections in units ,solve and write the answer with proper units. Remember to take into consideration the Van’t Hoff factor if applicable.

l Do all numerical of intext and back exercise w.r.t numerical.

l For last three chapters, prepare short summarised notes including definition with example. No structural details are required in these chapters.

l For Organic Chemistry, prepare the various chapters w.r.t. Name reactions, mechanism and reasoning questions based on structure and physical properties, distinctions, flow diagram for preparation and properties . Revise them regularly and practise them in writing. Wherever possible draw resonating structures. Practise all conversions at the back of each chapter by yourself.

l For Inorganic Chemistry, remember the position of p-Block elements in order with configuration and d-Block 3d series with exception of 4d and 5d series and last element with all the exceptions. Learn definitions like disproportionation reaction, inert pair effect, etc. with example.

l In p-Block,divide the chapter into reactions, structures, general trends and their variations along with the group with reason and uses.

l D-Block can be divided into three parts — 1)

d-block general trends with reason,2) preparation of KMnO4 and K2Cr2O7 and their properties and structures, effect oh pH,3) f-Block (configuration of exceptions ,comparison of lanthanoids and actinoids,Lanthanoid and actinoid contraction ,its cause and consequences, uses of misch metal and its composition)

l Coordination compounds one question on nomenclature, one on isomerism, one on VB theory of a complex, one on CFT and the applications of complexes is important.

l Frame the answer in mind first and, wherever possible, give the resonance structure, reaction and write the answer in limited words.

Make use of the 15 minutes reading time to go through the question paper carefully.

l Begin the paper by attempting the questions you can answer easily, leaving space for questions of which you are not very confident.

l Write the answer neatly,to the point ,properly numbered, label schematic diagram (if required) with correct units for numericals.

l Write the data given and the relevant formula in the numerical clearly as it can carry more weightage than calculations.

l Highlight points by underlining important

concepts.

l All questions that ask you to distinguish between different compounds in Organic Chemistry must be written with observations of both compounds for a given test.

l Always write balanced chemical equations.

Try to use minimum number of steps in an organic conversion .

Concentrate more on your strong points / topics and revise them thoroughly. There is no need to start a new topic as it creates confusion and lowers your confidence level.

l Learn basic concepts of Chemistry,do not mug up without understanding.

Study each chapter precisely.

l Practise numerical problems from Electrochemistry such as electrode potential, equilibrium constant, conductivity as they are important. Never ignore numerical problems as it is a good way to score marks. Just by applying formulae, you can get the answer.

l Questions from chapters such as Organic compounds containing nitrogen, biomolecules, polymers and chemistry in everyday life are easy to learn. They help score marks directly.

l Written practise of CONVERSIONS can get good marks. If not prepared, then it is not advisable to cram at this point of time.

Topics such as bond angle, bond order, resonating structures, identifying compounds from chapter p-block elements are also important.

ACCOUNTANCY

Students must work on their concepts in order to prepare for Accountancy exam

At the time of preparing a topic, list down all the concepts related to that topic ( eg. Various cases for treatment of goodwill,WCF,etc.) in a summary form in a separate register ,to be revised on the day before the exam.Reading time must be used to understand the requirements of the questions and the content of the answer.

It is important to write neatly and avoid overwriting and too much use of short forms.

The narrations must be given with journal entries and proper format is a must in order to avoid unnecessary deduction of marks.

Working notes are very important and must be shown neatly as they carry marks.

Working notes should be shown either in the beginning or at the end of the answer and not in between the answer.

In the chapter of ‘Ratio Analysis’,the formula must be written before proceeding with the answer.

The questions should be attempted either in the sequential order or in the reverse order.

It is very important to read the question carefully and write only what the question is about. For eg. There is no need to pass journal entries if the question is about for ledger accounts and vice versa.

It is better to prepare combined capital a/cs of partner ‘Parnership A/cs’ rather than individual Capital A/cs.

In the chapter of cash flow statements,

placement of items according to AS-3 (revised) is very important.

Do not ignore the theoretical portion of all the chapters.
