Gurgaon to test Iranian larvicide to curb dengue

A delegation of Iranian scientists met Divisional Commissioner,MCG officials and health officers to discuss the pilot project.

With Gurgaon becoming Haryana’s dengue capital this year, the district administration and municipal corporation plan to use a “made in Iran” eco-friendly larvicide “Bioflash” to control the spread of vector-borne diseases.

According to a district administration official,a delegation of Iranian scientists met the Divisional Commissioner D P S Nagal,MCG officials and health officers this week to discuss the pilot project.

“After watching the presentation given by the Iranian delegation,we have decided to constitute a joint team of officials of MCG and health to spray the vector-control in areas with high larvae count in Gurgaon. A few days later, they will study the larvae count of the region sprayed with the new larvicide. If the tests are successful, the larvicide would be used across Gurgaon,” Nagal said.

The delegation led by Nainjot S Sawhney,in a presentation to district authorities, said the larvicide is eco-friendly and only kills larvae of mosquitoes. “It is harmless to plants, animals and humans. The water with the larvicide is also safe for human consumption and is effective in killing all types of mosquitoes,” Sawhney said.

Dr Mahendra,District Malaria Officer (Gurgaon),said,“It is biodegradable and easy to use. For the past decade (it has kept) vector-borne diseases in Iran in control. Authorities have given a green signal for its testing in Gurgaon.”

Sources in the administration said that the decision was taken after many of Gurgaon administration officials including the Gurgaon Police Commissioner and his officers were diagnosed with dengue.
