Gurbani grabs the lead

Young Gurbani Singh is living up to the reputation she earned herself after claiming the All India Ladies title in the last season. On Wednesday, the 14-year-old from Delhi Golf Club grabbed the lead from under Gauri Monga’s nose at the 17th Punjab Open Ladies Amateur Golf Championship. Gurbani, who won her first amateur title around this time last year, has been keeping the errors minimum, and her second straight 75 on the second day of the tournament in Chandigarh proved enough to get a three-shot lead over Monga.

Monga, another city girl, began her day with a double bogey, and kept tumbling. Five more bogeys, and no birdies on her card, meant a seven-over 79 round.

The best round of the day, however, belonged to 17-year-old Rabiya Gill. Gill’s two-over 74 was built on the back of just 26 putts through the round.

She has moved up to the third spot, just a shot behind Monga. Manju Jakhar edged past Meher Dhillon to lead in the Silver Division, while Dalbir Sahi charged past overnight leader Chetna Arjun to lead by three shots in the Bronze Division.

Scores: Championship: Gurbani Singh 150; Gauri Monga 153; Rabiya Gill 154

Silver Salver (Nett): Rabiya Gill 144; Gurbani Singh 144; Riddhima Dhillon 145
