Guard fires at robbers, may get bravery award

A security guard with the Delhi Jal Board reportedly fired at three robbers in Narela,Outer Delhi,on Tuesday night.

A security guard with the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) reportedly fired at three robbers in Narela,Outer Delhi,on Tuesday night. The three — Sher Khan,Waseem and Moshim— were arrested, and police are considering awarding the guard for his bravery.

Police said the incident occurred near a graveyard in Sector-5,Narela. The guard,Kamlesh Kumar (38),was heading to the DJB office in Tikri when the assailants stopped him.

“I had left my home at Shivpuri, and was passing through an isolated stretch, when the three pushed me off my cycle. The trio snatched my mobile phone and wallet, which contained Rs 1,700 and two ATM cards. They even tried snatching my 12-bore double-barrel gun,” he said.

That was when Kumar started firing. “I only aimed at their legs,to prevent them from escaping. Then I called my brother, who alerted the police,” he said.

This was not the first time Kumar exhibited his bravery. Two years ago, when the guard was posted at a centre of the New Delhi Power Ltd ,he was given the bravery award for preventing a theft. Kumar, who belongs to Mainpuri district in Uttar Pradesh, had moved to Delhi three years ago. He studied till Class X,and landed a job with DJB as a security guard last year.

“We are considering awarding the guard for his bravery,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) B S Jaiswal.
