Guard at construction site held for elderly woman’s murder in Delhi’s Jafrabad

The complainant, who works in a private company in Chawri Bazaar, said his mother’s gold earrings, phone, smartwatch and a purse along with Rs 20,000 in cash were missing.

The woman was taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Shahdara by her son and a neighbour Samsher Singh, and a case under IPC sections 452 (trespassing) and 394 (robbery) was registered at the Jafrabad Police station on May 16. On May 18, IPC section 302 (murder) was added when the woman succumbed to the injury.

DCP, Crime Branch, Amit Goel identified the accused as Rajan Sharma. Police said he has studied until Class 10 from a government school, and worked as a guard on a construction site.

The robbery-cum-murder had led to concern and fear among locals, after which the case was assigned to a team of ASRC/Crime Branch, Shakarpur. Search operations were carried across western Uttar Pradesh and Northeast Delhi based on inputs and CCTV footage.

On June 6, the police were informed that the accused was seen in Delhi’s Ghonda area.

Based on the tip-off, raids were conducted in Ghonda alongside Maujpur and Jafrabad, and Sharma was apprehended. Police have recovered two anklets, four bangles, a smartwatch, a phone and break-in tools used as the murder weapon, apart from a motorcycle, from the accused.
