Govt panel to review new judicial districts

Delhi High Court on Monday directed the Delhi government to revive its panel headed by the Chief Secretary to resolve the issues regarding the jurisdiction of the 11 newly created judicial districts.

Delhi High Court on Monday directed the Delhi government to revive its panel headed by the Chief Secretary to resolve the issues regarding the jurisdiction of the 11 newly created judicial districts.

The Dwarka Court Bar Association had filed a PIL challenging the notification passed by the High Court, calling it arbitrary.

“By this notification, areas that are 1-km away from the Dwarka court complex have been put under the jurisdiction of the Patiala House courts, while applicants living in areas like Uttam Nagar, which are three-km from the Dwarka court, have to approach the Tis Hazari court, which is nearly 30 km away,” Senior Advocate HS Phoolka, who represented the Dwarka Bar Association, said.

The court of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Indermeet Kaur has asked the government to revive the panel within two weeks and directed that the panel must consider issues raised by the Dwarka Court Bar Association and representations of other Bar associations.

The court said it will take a decision within six weeks, after taking note of representations of the lawyers’ body and other stakeholders.

It refused to issue a stay order on the proposed shifting of some courts from Dwarka District courts premises to Patiala House District courts, effective from March 1.

“Let the courts be shifted, they can be shifted back,” Justice Kaul said after Phoolka argued that the shifting would inconvenience litigants.
