How would Dr Dre,Geranimo and Ai Weiwei feel if they sat down for dinner together over some ‘90s pop music? Exactly what you will feel when you go to Boombox Cafe in Khan Market. The cafe offers a cultural bhelpuri with numerous inspirations in food, ambience and music. Once you walk up the stairs, that displays funky signs like “Wild Pandas Ahead” and “Proceed with Caution”,you will find yourself in a dimly lit dining area, where the walls, shutters and every other surface is covered with African-American graffiti. The cafe is cleverly divided into different sections. But most of it is a punk, ghetto area, with dim lights and hookahs, next to a plush section with tall chairs.

If the choice in the dining area is not overwhelming enough, there is more than ample choice for cuisines. With street food from North America,Middle East,South-east Asia and Europe to choose from,a regular diner will have to spend a good half-an-hour contemplating the choices. We started with good ol’ dim-sums (Rs 195) and gatsby. The dim sums were well-made,with perfectly cooked spinach, cottage cheese and corn filling. The gatsby (Rs 390),a sandwich-cum-sub stuffed with chicken served with french fries, was a little bland for the Indian palette.

We then moved on to shish taouk (Rs 390),from the Middle Eastern cuisine. A kebab-like delicacy, the chicken was juicy and the accompanying sauces were divine. The cheese burrito (Rs 390) from the European cuisine section was a traditional burrito filled with cheese, beans and cottage cheese, served with rice and salad.

Like their quirky décor, the cafe also had a wide,if slightly overpriced, range of drinks. We stuck to the basics and ordered a mojito and a cosmopolitan (both priced at Rs 320). The mojito was overtly minty. However, the cafe got its act together with the cosmopolitan,a mix of cranberry

and vodka.

For dessert,we ordered their ‘special’ bhains ki aankh. Intrigued by the name,we were quite excited to try this one but the dish was a tad disappointing. The cafe served us chocolate brownie with two scoops of hard vanilla ice-cream placed on top of it. We squinted and turned around the dish but we could neither find the bhains nor the aankh.

Dessert apart, the cafe is a perfect place if you don’t mind spending a lot of money. The food portions are large and enough for two people,so order at your own risk. We recommend going to this one. Meal for two: Rs 3000

(including alcohol)
