Commonwealth Games 2010 gets a new anthem, albeit unofficial

The opening ceremony of Commonwealth Games 2010 last Sunday ended with A R Rahman belting out its official anthem that painted a picture of a ‘prosperous India’. The music maestro, however, seemed unaware of a rather uneasy, bitter melody — Kaisa Mera Desh. This, labelled as the ‘unofficial CWG anthem’,has been composed by Mumbai-based rapper Krishna Kaul in response to “the shame and insult faced by the common man” due to the CWG corruption and mismanagement fiasco.

The 23-year-old rapper, popularly known as Young Prozpekt, put the song on YouTube ahead of the Games inauguration and in a day’s time, the video had crept up to the fourth spot in the category of Today’s Most watched videos (musicians) in India and Today’s Top 100 in Most watched Video in India. The desi rap song has been shot in Mumbai and attempts at showcasing the stark helplessness and poverty of the common man even as crores are being spent on the Games.

“I feel embarrassed of what the world press wrote about India. It was not the common man’s fault that the Games were literally falling apart. We have wasted a huge amount of money for an 11-day event. It’s tragic,” said Kaul, who started rapping at the age of 13 in London.

“The official anthem by Rahman came out at the wrong time. While the CWG scandals were slowly unfolding,we were being forced to feel happy and positive with that song. It was then that I decided to make a song that was not going to be sugar-coated with lies,” he says.

Kaul has earlier collaborated with artists like Vallejo-based rapper Soldier Hard, who is known for producing albums from Iraq during his posting with the American army,Indo-Canadian artist Pacifik and Indo-American rapper Sonny Brown. “I used to rap in English earlier but decided to localise it for wider audience. Hip Hop and rap are a way to express your anguish. A lot of people have told me on Facebook and YouTube that they are glad that I am talking about a serious issue rather than women and vodka,” Kaul says.
