‘Games delegates satisfied with work’

Barely a month after he expressed apprehensions that next October’s Commonwealth Games could be a “partial failure”,Commonwealth Games Federation president Mike Fennell has now expressed satisfaction over the progress made, and hopes that Delhi would host a “world class” event.

Or so claims the Games organising committee.

Organising committee secretary-general Lalit Bhanot told the media on Saturday evening that Fennell was happy with the work done in the last one month. “Fennell expressed satisfaction in a meeting and mentioned that there was a lot of progress in preparations over the last few weeks,” Bhanot said.

Bhanot said the organising committee made a detailed presentation to the visiting delegates from Commonwealth countries. “It was an hour-long presentation and we showed them 151 slides,” Bhanot said. “We answered whatever queries the delegates had,and they were happy afterwards.”

The committee today presented a revised schedule of various sports events. The marathon event, which was to start and end at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, will now begin and finish at the India Gate. The 20-km walk will start and end at the Rajpath and two cycling road race events will now take place on the Greater Noida Expressway,it was announced.

Bhanot also said the organising committee has finalised 17 foreign delegates — one for each discipline — to oversee the conduct of the Games.

On Sunday,Fennell will chair a meeting of the executive board, which will be attended by,among others,Games Federation vice-patron Prince Edward of Britain.

Earlier,Queensland Premier Anna Bligh met Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi and sought India’s support for Gold Coast’s bid for the Commonwealth Games in 2018.
