Game up for man who was using forged licence for past five years

Five years after he was involved in an accident and let off with a fine of Rs 1,000,a man has been arrested on charges of forgery and cheating.

According to police, Dharmender Kumar was arrested after the Mathura Transport Authority submitted a report to the Delhi Police, saying the licence send to them for verification was found to be forged.

On May 2007,Kumar had been involved in an accident injuring a fellow passenger at the Moolchand flyover in Lajpat Nagar in Southeast Delhi.

“A case of rash and negligent driving was registered against Kumar. A chargesheet had also been filed in 2009 in the incident and he was produced in court. The court let Kumar go with a fine of Rs 1,000. But police during investigation, had sent a photocopy of Kumar’s licence to the Mathura Transport Authority since it was issued from there,” police said.

While everyone had forgotten about the case, the Lajpat Nagar police were surprised to receive a report from the Mathura Transport Authority on July 2,stating that Kumar’s licence was a forged one. The report said Dharmender Kumar had never been issued any licence by the authority. The number as indicated in the licence had been issued to one Praveen Kumar, the report said.

“The report which came last week mentioned that the photograph on the licence has been changed and that it was not that of the original licence-holder. Kumar had been driving vehicles using the same forged identity card for the past five years. Our teams spoke to the neighbours of Kumar in Sangam Vihar where he had resided earlier and found out his present address. Even he was surprised when we arrested him on charges of forgery on July 3 as he had not expected it,” said the officer.

A case under sections 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating),471 (using as genuine a forged document) and 474 (forgery of valuable security) of the Indian Penal Code had been registered against Kumar at the Lajpat Nagar police station.
