Frozen Spaces

Architectural forms and geometrical lines have always dominated her work and it’s no different this time. Pooja Iranna has spent the last year working on a single watercolour. The massive work,measuring 5ftx25ft,is painted in earthy shades of yellow and brown. Iranna uses fine lines to create blocks that join together to make structures. “It’s a tedious process,with seven-eight layers. Usually artists use a thick brush for watercolours but I’ve chosen a very thin brush to get the dense intensity,” says the 43-year-old artist. Describing her work as “abstract and minimalist” she notes that block structures interest her due to their solid nature. “It can be related to how civilisation has survived. We create architectural spaces hoping that they last forever,freezing them in time,” says the post-graduate in painting from College of Art,Delhi. While the work will take another month to complete,Iranna will showcase it in a group show next year.
