Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday announced free bus travel for the transgender community in DTC and cluster buses. In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) by Arvind Kejriwal, he said, “Transgender person have always been ignored and none of the governments did anything for them. I am happy to announce that transgender persons will get free ride on buses in Delhi. Just like women are not charged for bus rides, transgender community will also be provided free bus travel in Delhi.”

He said that the decision would be introduced in the cabinet in a few days, and once the cabinet notifies it, the scheme would be implemented within a few weeks.

Under the free pink ticket scheme, more than 100 crores of tickets have been sold so far currently. In the capital city of India, women are provided free travel on these buses and the scheme began in October 2019.

“Women are already provided free travel in Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and cluster buses operated by the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Limited (DIMTS). We plan to extend the facility of free travel to people from the third gender too,” a senior transport department official told PTI, a news agency.

The official added that the social welfare department of the Delhi government has data on people belonging to the third gender in the city which will be helpful for the scheme.

Last April, the Delhi High Court instructed the Delhi government to recognise the transgender community as the third gender on bus tickets issued by the DTC.

The Delhi government’s women and child development department had approved various measures for transgender people, including the addition of a “third gender” category in job application forms and the setting up of monitoring cells to protect them from abuse.

According to the Census 2011, the population of the transgender community in Delhi stood at 4,213. However, according to officials 1,176 people were enrolled as voters.
