If you enjoy camping when the air is cool and the sun is gentle, winter is a great time to enjoy nature’s beauty. During this breezy season, the Himalayas present a peaceful landscape, featuring snowy forests, frozen rivers, and quiet valleys that attract travellers seeking something unique. If you crave solitude and natural beauty, these lesser-known Himalayan spots offer a memorable winter camping experience, away from crowds and close to the mountains.
Chitkul, deep in the Kinnaur region, looks magical in winter. You’ll see wooden houses, frozen streams, and snow-covered apple orchards. Camping here means fresh mountain air, stargazing, and a real break from technology. The area is only reachable before heavy snow blocks the road, so it’s best for experienced winter campers.
Sainj Valley, in the Great Himalayan National Park, is quiet and not crowded. In winter, snow covers its terraced fields and cedar forests. You can camp in the meadows of Shangarh or by the Sainj River and enjoy the peace. The gentle terrain and easy access make it a good choice for beginners.
While Auli is known for skiing, its upper meadows offer winter camping. Snow-laden oak forests, panoramic views of Nanda Devi, and vast white bugyals create an alpine wonderland. Campers can trek up to Gorson Bugyal and set up tents under a wide, silent sky. Expect biting cold, though.

Ladakh’s winters are tough, but Panamik, famous for its hot springs, gives you a unique cold-desert camping experience. Snow sits next to sand dunes and rocky mountains. The hot springs help you stay warm in the freezing weather. It’s a quiet, remote spot best for campers used to very cold conditions.
Mechuka is one of the most beautiful winter spots in Northeast India. In the cold season, you’ll see wooden houses, old monasteries, and a wide, frozen valley that’s perfect for camping. The calm Siyom River adds to the charm. It’s best to visit in early winter before heavy snow arrives.
Winter turns Deoria Tal into a glistening, semi-frozen lake surrounded by dense forests. Campsites overlooking Chaukhamba peaks offer soothing sunrise views. The short trek from Sari village makes it ideal for beginners, but temperatures plunge sharply at night, making it perfect for an authentic Himalayan winter experience.
