Fool of Fun

At first glance,it is hard to make sense of Aditya Pande’s art installation titled Not in Fool Form — an iron gate on the floor and a circle and semicircle drawn on the wall of a room illuminated by fluorescent green light. It all seems bizarre, until one goes closer and is surprised by the hidden message the artist has envisioned. The word ‘Fool’ is welded onto the gate and also hidden within its various patterns. A computerised voice reading the word “Do” is the representation of a circle and semicircle on the wall. These two unique, digital worlds signify the artist’s fear and his joy of failing.

The 35-year-old Delhi based artist, who has studied graphic design, says,“My work is a celebration of being a fool. A joker is one of the most talented entertainers. Being foolish is sometimes a desirable trait, especially when you are being creative.”

This installation is a part of the project called “Act & Accomplish”,and is on display at Nature Morte Gallery,Neeti Bagh. The show is the result of a two-week residency in the Capital that involved artists and curators from Germany and India, and discussions such as “How the contemporary art world is professionalising”. The installations of all the artists on display is a culmination of these discussions. The concept of the project is to delve into the idea of performance.

There is also Abhishek Hazra’s If your revolution needs dancers, can I apply? — a work that interrogates an artist’s position as a political actor and artist Kym Ward’s performance-based work titled Because no body is predictable that engages people to discuss the artwork. Ward’s work includes her hand, which is painted in gold, that emerges through a hole in a round black table covered with golden foil while she silently hides beneath the table surrounded by curtains. The audience is then engaged in a group discussion and asked questions such as what does the piece say about the personality of the artist and what does it signify.

Ward says,“Some thought my art piece represented Ferrero Rocher and I was intrigued by this idea.” With regard to her personality, many also thought that she was shy, narcissistic and brave. These are definitely some interesting responses for an artist who sports a large tattoo of a rose with feathers across her chest.

The exhibition is on till August 11 at Gallery Nature Morte,A-1,Neeti Bagh,New Delhi.
