Finally replying to the “fake degree” allegations raised against him in an election petition filed by former BJP MLA Karan Singh Tanwar, AAP MLA Surinder Singh on Thursday told the court that he had “not pursued studies from Sikkim University” and the name of the university had been written due to an “inadvertent typographical error”. “This petition is politically motivated,” said Singh in his reply.
“The AAP MLA submits that he has not pursued studies from Sikkim University and, perhaps due to an inadvertent typographical mistake, the name of the said university had been mentioned as Sikkim University, whereas he has pursued his studies from EIILM University, Sikkim, and thus the inadvertent error,” Singh said in his affidavit.

Tanwar had filed an election petition against Singh, alleging that he had given “false” information regarding his education and had worn the army uniform during campaigning. “The petitioner is making the allegations merely on presumptions and suppositions by taking benefit of the typographical error committed inadvertently by the typist in the affidavit. However, there is no qualification prescribed for contesting as an MLA. Respondent No. 1 is graduate which is true and, moreover, the question of said erroneous entry having misled the voters does not arise,” stated the affidavit.
Singh also refuted allegations that he had been wearing the army uniform. He said the plea had “failed to notice” that he had not been wearing “the complete army uniform” and had only been wearing “army-colour
T-shirt and jacket without any badge or belt”.
