Come Friday, Delhi University (DU) students boarding the U-Special bus from Ramjas College to reach Purvanchal Hostel in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) would be in for a pleasant surprise.
Prateek Aggarwal, a former DU student, will take part in Delhi Transport Corporation’s (DTC) ‘Talent Galore, It’s Friday (TGIF)’ initiative, performing Indian classical music on the bus. The ride is set to begin at 3.20 pm.
This is DTC’s initiative to encourage budding artists to showcase their talent and creativity on U-Special buses every Friday. “One can sing, recite poetry, perform mimicry and stand up comedy, tell stories… while the bus is on the road,” said DTC Managing Director Prince Dhawan.
“The key aim is to encourage students to use U-Special buses more. All these buses are electric and if more and more students use these buses, this will not only curb pollution but also promote these buses,” Dhawan added.
He maintained that DTC has received over 1,000 entries from artists to participate in TGIF.
Officials said that every Friday, the DTC’s operations team will select one artist and allot him or her a route where they can perform. “We are starting this from tomorrow from Ramjas College to Purvanchal Hostel, JNU at 3.20 pm,” said an official.
Aggarwal, who will be performing on Friday, said, “It is a very good opportunity for budding artists. It will also boost their confidence as they would be performing in front of an audience.”
The ‘University Special’ (U-Special) bus service returned to DU after more than 10 years last month. Over 50 DTC e-buses have been dedicated for the service, connecting North Campus, South Campus and other major colleges on 28 routes.
