At first,Kafe D’or appears to be a small restaurant,with rustic stucco walls and nice worn wooden furniture. Then we spot a wide staircase leading to a lower seating area with some tables and a bar. The only jarring note is the music which is a medley of disco and ’80s pop. Rick Astley seems incongruous in this setting.

The restaurant says it serves contemporary European fare,and the menu offers exactly that. The menu is extensive but there is disappointingly little experimentation. After some reflection,we start with the Pate de Maison (Chicken Liver Pate) accompanied by Melba toast and rocket leaf salad in a balsamic reduction. The service is quick and we’re served a large plate filled with three generous dollops of Chicken Liver Pate,several slices of Melba toast and the salad. The Pate is velvety and subtly flavoured,though it has a faint after-taste of egg yolk. The crispy rocket leaves and the Balsamic reduction are an excellent accompaniment,adding a crunchy texture and a nice sour taste. Next up is a fish and avocado roulade,one of the few unusual items on the menu. The portion is again good,several pieces of roulade accompanied by in-house mayonnaise. The fish is well-cooked but also under-flavoured. Despite its mild taste,it completely overpowers the avocado. The only recourse is to drown the fish in mayonnaise.

For our main course,we have Tarragon Chicken cooked in a pot accompanied by Arborio rice,‘white’ sauce and boiled vegetables. The chicken is nicely-cooked and the unimaginatively-named white sauce complements the rice,which is al dente.

The dessert selection is limited so we decide to satiate our sweet tooth elsewhere in the village. We leave with a pleasant feeling (despite the music).
