Election in December possible

After the BJP, Congress and AAP expressed their inability to form a government when called upon by Najeeb Jung.

The possibility of Delhi going to polls by the end of December has not been ruled out, sources in the Delhi Election Commission said on Tuesday. Various possibilities are being weighed and more discussions over dates will be held later this week and a decision taken soon after, sources told Newsline.

After the BJP, Congress and AAP expressed their inability to form a government when called upon by Lt-Governor Najeeb Jung on November 3, fresh elections became certain in the capital that has been under President’s rule since February. If not in December, Delhi is likely to go to polls in February, 2015 — one year after President’s rule was imposed.

Speculation of polls in December did the rounds even in the BJP on Monday. “A BJP leader asked party workers and leaders to complete all inaugurations and official functions in Delhi as elections could be announced by next week,” a senior party functionary said.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Election Commission is busy completing its special summary revision of electoral rolls that started on October 15. Joint Chief Electoral Officer Rajesh Goyal said 1.1 lakh people had filled Form 6 for addition to the rolls, while about 24,000 forms were filled for corrections or transpositions within an assembly constituency.

Goyal said to prevent loss of new forms, the commission has started issuing an instant ID to the person filling the form, who can track it on the commission’s website.

Newly registered voters may not find spelling or factual errors in their voter IDs as the commission has also started an Epic Content Verification Form to allow new voters to verify their voter ID and make corrections, if necessary.

SC rejects AAP plea on poll date

The Supreme Court on Tuesday turned down a request by the AAP to set a deadline for the Election Commission to hold elections in Delhi. A Constitution bench led by Chief Justice of India H L Dattu said it was for the EC to decide on the poll dates.
