Expect your city to go dark today, between 8.30 pm and 9.30 pm. People, restaurants, and organisations across Delhi are pulling out all the stops to make sure Earth Hour turns out to be a success. Earth Hour is a global initiative by the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) to highlight the importance of saving energy, and is an annual event which advocates switching off all electrical appliances for an hour.

BSES,the company which provides electricity to much of Delhi,is sending out 10 lakh messages to its customers. In collaboration with WWF,BSES has also been showing a documentary,Earth Hour to Resident Welfare Associations in colonies such as Safdarjung Enclave, and Paharganj. “Besides going to several RWAs,we also called a meeting in Central Delhi, where we screened the film,” says Prashant Dua,part of the corporate communications team at BSES.

At the restaurant Earth Lounge,Gurgaon,“all electrical appliances will be off, candles will be lit instead”. “We also have special cocktails and mocktails for the hour. A part of our proceeds from cocktail and mocktail sales will go to Greenpeace India,” says Anand Prakash,General Manager,Earth Lounge,Gurgaon.

At India Gate, you can pledge your support even as Palash Sen performs between 6.30 pm and 10.30 pm. Brand ambassador Vidya Balan is also scheduled to make an appearance.
