Even as counting of votes in the Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) election progressed late into Thursday, the Indian National Teachers’ Congress (INTEC) won five of 15 DUTA executive posts.

While all four candidates fielded by left-leaning Democratic Teachers’ Front (DTF) for the executive posts won,Academics for Action and Development (AAD) walked away with three seats. One seat was won by National Democratic Teachers’ Front (NDTF) and the remaining two by independents.

The counting of votes for the DUTA president continued past midnight. Of the 2,000 votes counted,DTF candidate Nandita Narain of St Stephen’s College was leading by 238 votes. Ashwani Shankar, presidential candidate of AAD-INTEC,got around 619 votes.

Members of DTF had been campaigning against the slew of academic reforms — the implementation of the semester system and the four-year undergraduate programme — brought about in DU in the last few years. The primary issue for AAD,on the other hand, has been the appointment and service conditions of teachers.

DTF candidate Saikat Ghosh of SGTB Khalsa College, who got elected to the DUTA executive with the maximum number of votes, said,“Nearly 80 per cent teachers turned up to vote.”
