The Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) called for a week-long strike starting Monday at its general body meeting on Friday.
The strike is to protest against two issues the imposition of the semester system at the Universitys undergraduate level,and Deepak Pentals continued stay as the Vice-Chancellor despite the end of his tenure.
Sources in the DUTA said there were chances the agitation may snowball into an indefinite strike,as the DUTA will be reviewing its position in another general body meeting scheduled on October 29.
On Friday,Kapil Sibal joined Deepak Pental at the receiving end of DUTAs ire,as the teachers body came out strongly against Sibals indifference. This indifference is nothing but support to the illegal V-C in his attempt to impose an ill-considered semesterisation scheme against the overwhelming academic opinion that the quality undergraduate education… would be adversely affected, said a press note.
Meanwhile,DUs Dyal Singh College has withheld the salaries for the month of September of two teachers who did not sign an undertaking stating they would teach in the semester mode. The college will also move to recover the salaries paid to one of them since July 21,when the current academic year began the other teacher has since signed the undertaking. A September 27 DU circular had asked teachers to sign a pro forma before September 30,stating that they were teaching in the semester mode.
Dyal Singh principal I S Bakshi said the salary of one of the teachers would be released soon. One of the teachers has refused to sign the pro forma. The other individual could not be contacted before September 30; he has since signed. I have requested that his salary be released soon, said Bakshi. All 52 other Science teachers have signed the undertaking,he said.
