An 18-year-old girl was killed, and her sister critically injured, after a dumper carrying sand overturned in the Sahibabad area of Ghaziabad on Sunday morning.
Senior police officers said both Hema Tomar (18) and Neha Tomar (19) were buried under the sand for about two hours before they were rescued. While Hema was declared dead on arrival at the hospital,Neha is in ICU.
Residents of the area, however, alleged that there was a delay in the rescue operation.
Senior officers said the incident took place at 5 am when the sisters, daughters of a retired a Army personnel, were taking a walk near the Hindon Air Force station. A speeding dumper, which was trying to negotiate a turn, lost control and turned turtle, burying the two girls under the sand. Residents tried to rescue the girls but could not find them under the rubble, a senior officer said.
A resident of the area,Ranjit Singh, said police arrived with no arrangements to conduct a rescue operation. Later,a JCB called, and the operation took off. The girls remained buried for close to two hours, Singh said.
The residents surrounded the police station and staged a protest.
A case has been registered against the driver of the truck. Both the driver and the helper fled the spot. Efforts are being made to track down the owner of the vehicle. We will also look into allegations of police laxity and action will be taken if anyone is found guilty of dereliction of duty, an officer said.
